Ice Jam

The Ice Jam is a marquee mid-season event for Atlantic Canada. The tournament features U15,U16 and U18 levels. We focused mostly on the U15 and U18 levels, there was top talent found at those levels for the 2012 through 2008 birth years.

The rink was on edge every time McCarthy touched the puck at the Ice Jam. He has noticeably improved his explosiveness and edge control since his last outing. The forward could transition from the defensive zone to the offensive zone in a flash, using powerful crossovers to build speed. Defenders struggled to contain McCarthy’s blend of creativity, puck control, and quick hands.

Jones is an undersized left hand shot D from PEI. Jones showed excellent mechanics in his skating. His puck handling and passing were sound and effective. Jones made an impression with his skating and also displayed nice poise under pressure.

Bohanon is a smooth defender to the Southern Rangers. He was excellent offensively, creating chances off stretch looks or in zone feeds. He runs the power play and showed good deception up top.

Cossaboom is a powerful left shot D for the southern rangers. Cossaboom is explosive, when he decides to go its tough to keep up with his acceleration. His shot also screams power, letting heavy snap shots go off the rush or from the blue line. He showed some creativity on the breakout, faking passes or using edge fakes to loose forecheckers.

Costello was great in the 2 games we watched. He has a long stride and reach which allows him to get to pucks others can’t. He showed a great wrist shot cutting across the circles. He also showed a nice breakaway finish off a forced turnover in the NZ.

Gates leads the way for the Islanders. He plays with great pace which allows him to always be available. Once he has it Tucker loves to get to the slot and let it fly. He has a nice shot and is able to score from distance.

Milliea is a much improved player from last spring. He showed explosive crossovers and the ability to advance the zone on his own. He was great up top, walking the line well and getting pucks through traffic.

Richard is an excellent skater. His ability to move away from the forecheck while keeping his eyes down ice was exceptional. He has nice edge work in behind the net and was making great outlets all weekend.

Shearer was buzzing all weekend for the Wolverines. He has a great motor and loves to use his skill and elusiveness to hold onto it until he can make a play. Shearer plays a bullish style on the wall, he is effective at tracking down pucks and finishing hits. We saw him display great creativity on a wrap around goal.

Peach turned in another offensive performance. His anticipation and position is excellent. When in the offensive zone Peach times passes and loose pucks well. He is deadly when given any time, showing a great scoring touch every time we watch.

Grace was all over the ice in a good way at the Ice Jam. Grace’s game extends to both ends. He is a true defender, shutting down the middle by matching speeds and guiding to the wall. He is able to separate puck from body and walk away with possession at a high rate. Offensively Grace was clutch. He wanted the puck on his stick at the end of the game and made it count. He showcased a laser shot with great accuracy from the tops of the circles.

Liu is another smooth skating defender from PEI. Liu is a great skater and is able to push up and angle players to the boards easily. He is great at advancing zones with his legs out a great first pass. The Express were running 2 units, it was easy to see why with 2 natural quarterbacks.

Keough is an exciting player that was also saw at the Atlantic Challange. He has improved in that short amount of time. His deception as at another level, baiting opponents out of the play to create 2 on 1s all over the ice. His edge work was the best we saw on the weekend. He maintains speed through transitions and fakes like no other defender at the event.

Richards is a cerebral forward from PEI. Richards makes the high percentage play and executes decisively. He showed great poise on the power play, threading pucks back door or into the bumper. Richards has a great shot. When given time and space, he gets his eyes up and picks his spot.

Hartman is an imposing power forward from PEI. He uses his strength to win battles and protects well while scanning. Hartman showed a very heavy shot, scoring on a one-touch bomb off a face off.

Kennedy is a smooth skating underage defender for the Gulls. Kennedy can really skate, showcasing nice edges and mobility. His puck handling is where he shines, Kennedy easily handles the puck with his eyes up allowing him to deceive and take dangerous ice.

Cranston is a powerful forward who finds a way to get his shot off often. Cranston uses his speed to push defenders back, takes the middle and shoots. His heavy accurate shot, added with the ability to shoot with speed makes Cranston super effective.

Tellenbach is an imposing figure for the Hitmen. The right hand shot defender is big, he uses his size to control the net front and box out to collect. He is efficient on the breakout, moving the puck up quickly and accurately. Tellenbach has a heavy shot from the point and generates rebounds for his forwards.

Macmullin is a smooth right hand shot D playing for the Nova’s. He was elusive up top, shaking wingers into shooting lanes and scooting down the wall. He was great at opening up his flank players on the powerplay. Defensively MacMullin was solid, using a clever stick to steal pucks and quickly go the other way.

Sampson is an impressive player for the Nova’s. The 2011 forward skates effortlessly, showcasing efficient crossovers and forward stride. Sampson has good hands and is able to make plays with his eyes up, consistently making exceptional passes without looking. Sampson showed a nice release on the powerplay where his routes and timing were excellent.

Browne is a 2012 we’ve seen before. He continues to excel. Playing with mostly 2011’s this year , Browne has able to showcase a great IQ and the ability to be consistent. His skills are good, but what makes Browne impactful is his anticipation and highly competitive nature.

It felt like Geizer was on the ice the entire game. He did log huge minutes, but the puck always seems to find him. Geizer has a great frame and uses it well in his stride. He is agile for his height, combine with slick stick handling he is tough to play one on one. Geizer showed a heavy and deceptive shot.

Cannon is a forward for the Gulls. His team made an impressive run, Cannon contributed with consistency and high IQ plays. Cannon wins a ton of battles and is deft at finding open teammates. He showed great vision and also execution on passes in all 3 zones.

There were multiple Lincoln MacDonalds at the ice jam- both made an impact. Lincoln MacDonald was a leader for Touro. He has great wheels and puts pressure on the defense off the rush and off the forecheck. He showed great poise on the power play, maintaining possession under pressure and used his eyes to open passing line. MacDonald has grit, he finishes check and plays hard along the wall.

The 2012 Lincoln MacDonald played big minutes for the Nova’s. MacDonald is an intelligent player. He takes great angles while forechecking and has a great stick. MacDonald was a threat with the puck on his stick. He was able to sell shot and set his teammates up all weekend. His competitive nature was on display, MacDonald embraces contact against any size opponent.

Ryan is a 09 Center playing for the Subaru Steele and prospect for the Halifax Mooseheads. Ryan’s game is built on intelligence and creativity. He is a pest to get around, he hides his stick well and has excellent hand eye. Ryan has quick hands, but his one-on-one success comes from anticipation and creativity. Ryan showed a great touch anywhere around the net, picking his spots and waiting for the goalie to leave a void. He was relentless along the wall and won the majority of battles all weekend.

Burke drove the offense for the Bandits at the ice jam. He continues to impress with his sharp cut backs and small area puck possession skills. Burke showed poise off the rush, threading passings through, over and around defenders. Burke showed great awareness and strength on plays to net, bearing down and finishing through checks. Burke was slick on breakaways, he used nice deception to freeze the goalie and anticipated openings well.

Peddle is a skilled forward playing for the Knights. The 2012 is a high IQ player, showing great anticipation and deception. Peddle has a low center of gravity and is difficult to knock off the puck. Peddle is dangerous off the rush and is difficult to defend one on one.
