New England Prep School - Holiday Tournaments

Scouts from all over travel to New England the weekend before Christmas to watch all the New England Prep School teams in action. The weekend featured 6 various tournaments. We focused on the the Kevin Mutch tournament at St.Sebastians school and the Groton & Lawrence Annual Holiday Hockey tournament.

Kaidan Sahajpal (2008)

Sahajpal is a 2008 forward for the Winchendon School. Sahajpal is “slippery” his edge work was the best we saw on the weekend, turning away from defenders while maintaining speed makes Sahajpal tough to defend. His puck possession was elite, display creative and quick puck handling to get where he wanted on the ice. Sahajpal showed a great snap shot, off the rush he used a drag and snap to test goalies. In tight he is unstoppable, quickly gathering pucks and ripping it over the goalie.

Cooper Ludwar (2007)

Ludwar is a 07′ forward for the Winchendon school. Ludwar has all the tools of a dynamic hockey player. Ludwar’s footspeed is exceptional, he is able to gain speed with his explosive cross overs and maintain it through excellent stride mechanics. Ludwar has a soft touch, he picks up bad passes and knocks down pucks with precision. Perhaps his most intriguing quality is his creativity. Ludwar makes the high level decisions and executes difficult plays regularly.

Easton Anello (2009)

Anello is a 2009 defender for Williston North Hampton. Anello is not in a rush, the game goes at his pace when he has the puck. He is able to move up the ice with poise and precision, getting the puck to his forwards at the right time. Anello was a smooth operator on the powerplay. He sold shot well leaving his flank players wide open to shoot or attempt a seam pass. When he did shoot he was accurate, getting pucks through for rebounds often.

Declan Grenache (2007)

Grenache is a 2007 forward for Williston North Hampton. The 07 has a bit of an odd stance but it doesn’t effect his game in anyway. Grenache flys, his first step is explosive and showed good seperation speed. His entries were elite. He eyes move all around the zone before picking the optimal play with the puck. Grenache was amazing on the powerplay. Playing the left flank he found lanes that didn’t even seem to be there, surprising his teammates with the puck on their stick.

Matt Macinnis (2008)

Macinnis is a left hand shot D for the Winchendon school. Macinnis flys, he is an exceptional skater and uses his skating to push up in the neutral zone to deny speed for the opposition. Macinnis gets the puck north, he keeps it simple and has a great first pass. Macinnis showed some good offensive ability, specifically off the rush using his speed to push back the D and make a play to the net or a teammate.

Richard Grace (2009)

Grace is a 09 left hand shot D for the Winchendon School. Grace is smooth, he has great skating mechanics and edge work. Using the net as a guard, faking up ice and spinning back to find a clean passing lane on the other side. Grace showed nice puck skills, his ability to scan and skate with the puck was notable.

Matas Janulis (2008)

Janulis is a 2008 left hand shot D playing for Lawrence academy. Janulis was excellent on the break out. He scans well while retrieving and has his decision made before getting to the puck, if it was dumped into his end it was coming out. Defensively he showed great feet, keeping forwards to the outside and holding the lines. Janulis has a missile. He had several snap shots on net, but showed a phenomenal one timer for a goal against Cushing.

Parker Murch (2007)

Murch is a 2007 forward for Cushing academy. Murch showed a great motor, giving defenders no time at all the break out with his quick skating and decisive angles. Murch plays fast, if the pass is available he takes. He has a great shot and is able to keep it low when the situation calls for it. Murch excels in the bumper spot because of his excellent positioning and quick decision making.

Joseph Covelluzzi (2009)

Covelluzzi is a dynamic forward for Cushing Academy. He attacks with confidence and isn’t afraid to skate with the puck. He showed some nice one on one moves , displaying his creativity and quick puck handling. Covelluzzi shined on the power-play. He created space with deceptive look-offs, his puck support and movement was excellent. Covelluzzi showed great anticipation and reaction under pressure; he evaded sticks and bodies with very little space to operate.

Blake Cash (2008)

Cash is an undersized forward for Cushing Academy. The 08 flys, he has quick feet and is hard to pin down in small areas. He showed excellent puck skills, evading puck checks and slipping passes around or through the defense. Cash is tough, he goes to the dirty areas and plays big along the wall.

Sebastian Mogull (2008)

Mogull is an exceptional skater. The 08 forward for Cushing academy has a near perfect stride, effortlessly galloping up the ice with his long stride. There was no panic in Mogull’s game, the smooth skater would get to pucks first, move to free space and then move the puck. Mogull showed nice work on the half-wall on the Powerplay leading to several grade A chances.

Brodie Farren (2007)

Farren was the lone bright spot for Proctor Academy. He saw plenty of pucks and did what he could to keep his team in the game. Farren showed a couple of ridiculous stops going post to post to rob Thayer of tap in goals. His athletism was on display as the opposition had him moving. Farren showed a fierce competitive nature on 2nd ,3rd or 4th chance opportunities.

Charlie Ness (2009)

Ness showed some really good creativity for Thayer Academy. The 09 forward skates well and likes to go on the attack. His willingness to attack the middle opened up space on the flanks for his teammate. Ness showed nice hands avoiding poke checks in the offensive zone to maintain possession.

Sean Sweeney (2009)

Sweeney’s smooth skating really stood out for Thayer. The 2009 forward was able to pick up pucks with speed and gain the opposing teams zone with ease. Sweeney showed a nice ability to handle the puck in the defenders area. With limited time and space Sweeney is able to push under sticks or pull into his feet to maintain possession. Sweeney can rip it, he showed a nice pull and drag shot coming down the right side of the ice.

Brian McFadden (2008)

McFadden is an imposing figure on the ice. He has a pro frame at 6’5″ and uses it well when needed. But size doesn’t define McFaddens game. He has great puck skills and awareness. McFadden used his own net to evade forecheckers before advancing the puck with percsisions. Offensively McFadden has nice “shake” up top. He makes difficult plays look simple, a slight head or shot fake to open a lane and the shot is on net.

Viktor Samal (2007)

Samal is a powerforward for the Holderness School. Samal has a nice frame and low center of gravity. Combined with his puck skills and creativity Samal is a dangerous player in the offensive end. He likes to take the puck to the net and has the skill and size to get to net. Samal likes to hunt pucks, using a nice stick or body check to separate players from the puck. Samal has a nice shot, he has the ability to change the angle to get it on the net and showed a nice one timer on the power play for a goal.

Tegan Gregory (2008)

Gregory is a 2008 defender for the Holderness School. Gregory is a left hand shot with exceptional skating. His quickness and straight away speed were on display as he was able to join or create the rush several times from his own end. Gregory shows nice puck skills, constantly advancing with his eyes up. On the blue line Gregory is tough to defend, putting wingers on skis as they try to keep Gregory infront of them. Gregory plays a heavy game for his size, winning the majority of his puck battles with a strong stick and tenacious mentality.

Michael Mosher (2007)

Mosher is a 2007 left hand shot playing big minutes for the Holderness school. Mosher has a pro-frame at 6’1″ and the skating ability of much smaller player. We didn’t see another defender with better footwork. Mosher surrounds pucks with footspeed and smooth edge work. He always faces up to the net or the middle of the ice, his toes never pointed in the wrong direction. With the puck, Mosher made quick, decisive decisions. He was able to snap pucks on net without hesitation. If the shot was unavailable he complete one touch passes to his D partner or forwards on the wall.

Owen Cronan (2008)

Cronan is a player on the rise. The 2008 forward for the Groton School showed some of the best speed at the event. Cronan’s crossover acceleration is exceptional. He was able to advance zones by himself using his elite skating. Cronan was able to break down defenders in the neutral zone with some really deceptive skating, Cronan purposefully interrupts his steps, leaving his opponent guessing left or right. Cronan has a nice wrist shot, he used his speed to push back defenders and fire around or through traffic.

Marcus Magri (2009)

Magri is an intriguing forward. Magri has exceptional skating mechanics, moving freely and effortless on the ice. Standing 6’1″ he has an explosive / long stride that helped him seperate while advancing zones. Magri’s entries were great, making plays with limited time and space either to thread a pass or maintain possession- he showed quick hands, anticipation and execution on his passes.

Finn Kearns (2008)

Kearns is an imposing figure. Standing at 6’2″ its not just the height but his overall size, he denies space easily with his pro frame. Kearns easily wins puck battles with a strong stick and outstanding balance. For his size Kearns showed really nice footwork and puck skills. Often looking off forecheckers before snapping a nice first pass.

Tucker Sinclair (2009)

Sinclair is a undersized forward for Saint Andrew College. Sinclair plays with speed and poise. He showed exceptional quickness and agility. Often getting to the puck first both off of reaction and foot speed- Sinclair was a step ahead. His agility along the wall was notable. Sinclair showed the most poise on the ice, if a hockey play was unavailable he protected the puck until he could make a play that maintained possession for his team.
